Momentum & Discipline
Junior Championship in Motion

This project marked my first experience photographing competitive sports at an international level. Over the course of multiple days, I documented junior athletes competing at the highest level of their discipline — capturing not just the intensity of the matches, but the focus, discipline, and dedication required to perform under pressure.
What stood out most was the universality of sport: regardless of background or nationality, every athlete shared the same commitment — to improve, to compete, and to give everything they had on the court.

THE STORY
There is something deeply humbling about witnessing young athletes compete at this level.
Before this project, I had very little exposure to squash. What I discovered was a sport defined by precision, endurance, strategy, and mental strength. Every match unfolded like a conversation in motion — fast, reactive, intentional.
What made this experience especially meaningful was watching how different teams brought their own rhythm and style to the game. The level of excellence was undeniable, particularly among teams with a long-standing relationship to the sport, but I was equally drawn to the determination and resilience displayed by athletes from across the world.
From the quiet moments before a match to the intensity of rally after rally, this project reminded me that growth often begins where familiarity ends. Being immersed in something completely new sharpened my instincts as a storyteller and challenged me to stay present, observant, and adaptable.

THE CRAFT
This championship was photographed entirely using natural light, requiring constant awareness of movement, timing, and court dynamics. The pace of play demanded fast decision-making, precise framing, and a strong understanding of the sport itself.
Technical approach included:
anticipating movement patterns and player positioning
maintaining consistency across rapidly changing matches
capturing peak action moments without disrupting play
organizing thousands of images by match, round, and athlete
delivering a fast, editorial-ready turnaround
All images were shot in RAW, allowing for accurate color control and consistency across a large volume of action-based imagery.
This project reinforced the importance of preparation — knowing the flow of the game, understanding match structure, and staying mentally one step ahead.

IMPORTANCE OF THIS PROJECT
This experience expanded my understanding of storytelling beyond familiarity and comfort.
Sports photography isn’t just about action — it’s about discipline, anticipation, and respect for the craft of others. These young athletes reminded me that mastery is built through repetition, patience, and dedication — values that directly mirror the creative process itself.
Covering this championship was a reminder that growth often comes from stepping into unfamiliar spaces, listening closely, and allowing the story to reveal itself through motion and effort.
Every project teaches something. This one taught me humility, focus, and the power of preparation.
